RMD Kwikform Iberica has completed the formwork contract for the Castro Daine Bridge over the Paivo River, 60km south east of Oporto, Portugal. The deck of the 117-metre long in-situ concrete structure was constructed with only 3 pours and was built by one of Portugal's leading civil engineering contractors, Construcoes Gabriel A.S. Couto S.A.
Support for the side spans utilised RMD Kwikform's Kwikstage modular steel shoring system that is capable of supporting leg loads of up to 75kN, while the 29-metre span used H-33 steel lattice sectional girders that were supported, 22 metres above the banks of the river, by RMD kwikform
RMD Kwikform's high-load-capacity Megashor towers. The formwork solution incorporated Superslim Soldier main beams and T-200 timber secondary beams.
The project utilised only standard components that were hired for the duration of the contract. According to Javier Ibanez, Managing Director of RMD Kwikform Iberica, this ensured rapid availability of the components for the project and the most cost effective solution. He also cited the company's experience on other major bridge construction projects, notably the Ozama Viaduct in the Dominican Republic, as being a major factor in winning the Castro Daine Bridge contract.
