RMD Kwikform Korea successfully completed the formwork design and supply contract for the Yongdam dam project – a multi-purpose concrete faced, rock-fill dam supplying water and electricity to Korea’s western coast development regions of Jongu, Iri, Kunsan and Kunjang. The project’s main contractor, Samsung Engineering and Construction, selected RMD Kwikform to provide formwork solutions for the construction of the approach walls, piers and weir, intake tower and power stations.
The project used a number of RMD Kwikform systems, including Superslim Soldiers and Alform Beams, for the construction of the approach walls and piers. Among the technical challenges faced by RMD Kwikform’s onsite supervisors was the need to accommodate the curvature of the weir face. Their solution was to supply purpose-designed formwork and to use versatile Superslim Soldiers to bolt the concaved panels together. This solution also included specially designed turnbuckles to ensure time efficient and safe stripping once construction was complete.
To enable construction of the intake tower and power stations, RMD Kwikform’s 80kN leg capacity Rapidshor modular support system was utilised. This reduced the number of required strip foundations and primary formwork beams, resulting in considerable material and labour cost savings for Samsung, which according to Lee Heu-Byung, the project’s Engineering Construction Manager, was a contributing factor in the company being awarded the contract. He comments: " RMD Kwikform’s radial gate weir forms in particular were easy to fit and strip and provided a good clean finish. Their sturdy construction gave Samsung the opportunity for maximum multiple reuse."
