Temporary propping solutions from RMD Kwikform help keep retailers window displays on view for shoppers at Worcester's Crowngate Shopping Centre.

Temporary propping solution from RMD Kwikform helps Interserve Project Services West Midlands Building keep retailers window displays on view for shoppers in Worcester.

When the Crown Estate, owners of Worcester’s landmark Crowngate Shopping Centre awarded a £3.2 million refurbishment programme to Interserve Project Services (IPSL) West Midlands Building, in June 2008 to give parts of the centre a new and exciting look, including a covered roof canopy, the retailers affected by the works were concerned about falling sales.

But thanks to an innovatively designed support system from RMD Kwikform, vital window displays and shop fronts were made accessible to the public, protecting retail sales at a time when every penny counts.

With phase one of the works delivering a new uniquely designed tiled floor to the Bull walk part of the centre, it was phase two of the refurbishment that involved the construction of a roof to cover the once open air Bull Entry Shopping section of the centre, that caused most concern for retailers.

In order to safely construct the roof, which uses steel beams to form the pitch required, the IPSL West Midlands Building team needed to construct a safe platform for its team of roof specialists to carry out the essential works, whilst keeping the shops and important walk way to the centre open.

Due to the makeup of the centre, the suggested use of a traditional tube and fitting scaffolding solution caused great concern with the incumbent retailers, as in order to provide the support needed scaffolding would have to cover a large amount of important shop front and window display space.

Commenting on the use of RMD Kwikform for the project, IPSL West Midlands Building Project Manager, Rob Shuker said: “Having not had much opportunity to deal with RMD Kwikform before, my perceptions were that is was a company that only dealt with major infrastructure and large scale projects.

“These perceptions were soon changed, as the RMD Kwikform team was more than happy to help me with my smaller scale but challenging project. Its staff were able to design a solution to make the project work for my team, the shopping centre management and the individual retailers.”

Challenged with designing a much more discrete solution for the project, RMD Kwikform engineers developed a system using heavy duty steel slimshor legs, placed at strategic intervals throughout the shopping centre to allow for clear access to shop fronts and entrances.

In order to support the stresses exerted by the roof team and weight of the steel beams, a steel slimshor frame assembly was designed to sit on top of the slimshor legs, evenly dissipating the stresses between the individual leg assemblies. Aluminium beams were then mounted on top of the frame assembly to form the base for the boarded platform required to assemble the roof canopy safely.

Rob: ” The solution was a real success and RMD Kwikform were able to react very quickly to our needs, specifically when at the last minute we had to change the design to incorporate a cantilever arrangement in order to protect the outside display of a flower shop from water run off.”

Commenting on the project, RMD Kwikform sales representative for the Midlands, Neil Pagett said: “Keeping shop fronts open in a refurbishment project like this is essential, but in order for a project of this nature to move away from the normal accepted scaffolding route, it takes vision and an understanding of what can be achieved.

“Thanks to Rob’s open approach to finding an alternative approach, his team has been able to challenge and change the approach to this kind of property development, working with us to develop a really successful solution.”
