RMD Kwikform Middle East designed and supplied a formwork and shoring solution for main contractor L&T Construction as part of the works taking place on the Khalifa Port Interchange project.

The AED592m Khalifa Port Interchange project is a development that will provide a link between Khalifa Port and E311 (Emirates highway), Rashid Bin Saeed, Al Rabha, Abu Dhabi. The full extent of the development saw the construction of four bridges with multiple spans, a 62 metre long, 20 metre wide tunnel and 12km of a four to six-lane highway.

In addition to these improvements, the main Abu Dhabi to Dubai road was widened from four to six-lanes along with the construction of a new main bridge. Al Gharf Street also had a new bi-directional two-lane bridge creating a connecting road to the Ghanada area. Once complete the interchange project will ease traffic congestion in the Al Samha region and alleviate the increased traffic that is predicted to arise from the new port.

RMD Kwikform’s supplied solution was used for the construction of four bridges and a number of culverts; however it was more than just the solution that won them the contract. Chris Jardine, General Manager – UAE at RMD Kwikform, explains;

L&T Construction had a very tight programme schedule, so therefore they needed a formwork and shoring solution that was not only cost effective, safe and quck to erect, but could also be applied across multiple structures simultaneously. Most importantly they also required continuous experience on site support on a daily basis. Working together, the RMD Kwikform team in UAE was able to meet all of these requirements and provided a very competitive solution on a monthly hire basis.

The solution supplied by RMD Kwikform was designed using predominantly ‘off the shelf’ equipment readily available from its Dubai based depot. Linked 80kN Rapidshor towers were used to support the main bridge construction; these towers were then topped with Superslim Soldiers, creating a solid load-bearing base for the cantilever sections that would form the multi-celled concrete sections of the bridges.

The cantilever sections were constructed using Superslim Soldiers and GTX Beams to create the decking. To achieve the cantilever a special adjustable crank soldier was fabricated and enabled engineers to make small adjustments to the cantilever to create just the right shape required as per the designs. The cantilevered edges were then easily craned and fixed into place, ready for pouring.

L&T Construction R. Ethirajan, senior Project Manager, commented on the solution and service supplied by RMD Kwikform;

The requirement to construct three huge bridge structures simultaneously on a busy highway meant we needed a temporary works partner that we could rely on to provide a high level of safety and a quality service, combined with a competitive shoring solution. RMD Kwikform worked hard on securing this contract and has succeeded on meeting our requirements.
