The development of a new water treatment plant in rural Shropshire showcases the quality of RMD Kwikform's 'off the shelf' formwork and falsework solutions.

When Severn Trent Water unveiled plans to construct a new £6million water treatment plant with primary contractor Interserve Project Services Ltd, RMD Kwikform were the natural choice to provide both the falsework and formwork to construct three, six-metre high concrete holding tanks.

The new water treatment plant, situated in Nesscliffe just outside Oswestry in rural Shropshire, is a purpose built facility to guarantee security of supply to Oswestry and the surrounding area. The facility itself is clearly visible in the surrounding Greenfield area, so a high-quality finish was of utmost importance, as the finished project is under the intense scrutiny of the public eye.

Following a number of tenders to find the perfect partner for the contract, for Rod Reeves, Project Manager at Interserve Project Services Ltd, there was one clear winner. “The most important thing when constructing these tanks is the quality of the finish at the right price. That wasn’t easy to achieve and RMD Kwikform put a lot of work in here to win this particular project.”

RMD Kwikform showed the strength of its core product line using ‘off the shelf’ materials to meet the challenge head on. Primarily comprising of Maxima Panels and Rapidshor shoring for the wall formwork. Superslim Soldiers were then used to provide beam side formwork when the soffit is poured. As with any RMD Kwikform project, safety is a key consideration. Ultraguard barriers integrated into the design have been utilised to provide excellence edge support for onsite staff.

Neil Pagett, Sales Representative at RMD Kwikform commented; “Thanks to the use of standard equipment we were able to provide Interserve with the most cost effective solution, enabling us to win the contract against some stiff competition.

Despite making use of the ‘off the shelf’ materials the project still had its inherent challenges to overcome, such as working on a flood plain with a high water table to install the equipment. Each concrete tank was built in two halves, meaning the same shutters had to be dismantled and moved to form both sides of the tank. Through RMD Kwikform’s innovative design and a thorough knowledge of its products key capabilities, the shutter work was able to be quickly dismantled and reused, providing both a solution to the problem and a cost saving to the project itself.

Rod Reeves, commented on the service provided by RMD Kwikform; “RMD Kwikform provided all the plans and drawings for the shutter work on the tanks, the result and quality of the finish has been nothing but outstanding.”

Neil continues, “its easy for people to forget, especially with some of the more recent large scale international projects we’ve worked on, that in the UK civil works such as the water treatment works in Nescliffe are and important and continuing core competency for RMD Kwikform, it’s what we do every day.”
