As part of its multi million dollar infrastructure investment programme, Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority awarded main contractor J&P a $458m contract to construct 10km of a four lane bypass in Doha. As part of the project, six bridges were constructed using Rapidshor shoring from RMD Kwikform.

Known as the West Corridor, this section of the bypass was constructed to meet the East Corridor project. For J&P to achieved the fast track programme time for the project, a combined design, equipment and site support solution was required.

This involved the design of formwork and shoring for bridges ranging in length from 164 to 170 metres. Utilising Rapidshor shoring, steel Superslim Soldiers and GTX timber beams, RMD Kwikform supplied over 1,256 tonnes of equipment to site, providing a dedicated site assistance technician to support the site team.

Commenting on the project, Konstantinos Chatzichristoforou, Structures Construction Manager for J&P said: “We have worked with RMD Kwikform on numerous projects across the world, so when it came to supporting the very tight programme time we had for this project, they were the natural choice. With a large amount of equipment required for the project, we needed to work with a design team that could react quickly, providing swift and safe solutions. We were also keen to have as much support on this project as possible, so the site assistance RMD Kwikform also proposed was a real differentiator.

“With safety, quality and speed all critical to the project, our site teams really engaged with the RMD Kwikform site technician, who provided initial erection training, site supervision and safety erection sign offs throughout the project. Having this support we were able to ensure all of the designs were followed to the letter and RMD Kwikform were able to proactively assist with further on-the-job familiarisation, to speed up the whole process.”

With RMD Kwikform equipment initially used on three structures, once these were complete, the site team was able to reuse the combination of Rapidshor, Superslim Soldiers and GTX Beams on the remaining three structures. This reduced the overall cost of the project and allowed the site team to benefit from lessons learnt and honed erection techniques for this next phase.

Nihad Al Hashemi, Business Development Manager for RMD Kwikform added: “This has been one of the largest projects we have been involved with in Qatar, which has required a great deal of support from our local yard and design teams. It was the flexibility of Rapidshor that really made a difference on this project and because the product can cope with varying levels of bridge curvature and camber, not to mention height, it is the perfect product for such projects.”
