Temporary works solutions for roads and highways

RMD Kwikform is a market leader in temporary works solutions for roads and highways projects. Renowned international projects include the West Corridor of the Doha Bypass in Qatar, the Tyne Tunnel and the Medway Crossing in the UK, and the Mdeirej Bridge, which is the highest bridge in the Middle East and connects Lebanon and Syria.

We know exactly the kind of considerations that come into play when designing temporary works solutions for roads and highways, such as wind strength and the ability to cope with loads from precast sections, as well as seasonal variations in temperature that may affect the rate that formwork concrete cures. Our expertise covers every type of concrete structure involved in road and highways projects, including bridge decks, pile caps, piers, columns, beams, slabs, cast-in-situ walls, wing walls, retaining walls and foundations.

What our customers think

“We have worked with RMD Kwikform on numerous projects across the world, so when it came to supporting the very tight programme time we had on the Doha Bypass project, they were the natural choice.” Konstantinos Chatzichristoforou, Structures Construction Manager at J&P

“The use of Paraslim has been so successful that despite its size the Athabia Flyover development has become a showcase project in Muscat and has generated a lot of interest through Oman and the construction industry.

Devising a solution that involves keeping the main road open and performing its regular duties while major rehabilitative work is being performed on a bridge overhead is no easy task, and RMD Kwikform was able to provide an efficient and effective means of achieving this goal.” James D’Souza, Construction Manager of Larsen & Toubro Oman

Factors to consider when specifying
a highway or roads project

  • Due to the structural challenges involved with many road and highway projects, early collaboration between the contractor and the temporary works provider is essential. We can work with you at the tender stage to identify the best temporary works solution for the job and help you secure that project.
  • BIM and 3D software can bring highways projects to life. Ely Bypass, the UK’s first viaduct using offset V-shaped piers, took advantage of 3D visualisation software to fully understand the challenges the build presented.
  • Productivity is key when constructing tunnels, particularly due to simultaneous works across an entire site. Large-scale travelling formwork systems remove the need to dismantle kit, as the system will ‘travel’ from pour to pour.
  • When widening an existing flyover, it won’t generally be possible to close surrounding roads during construction works. Fortunately, there are formwork products, like those used on Oman’s Athabia Flyover, that can overcome this challenge.
  • Installing viaduct sections can be a challenge; if supporting pillars are slim, they may struggle to support large horizontal loads. These issues can be overcome, however, as demonstrated in Spain’s Cadagua Link.
